I never considered a Subaru (other than the BRZ and WRX of course) before I saw this.

I really like it and was previously swearing off another outback after the issues we’ve had with our 2013 Outback. Still only 182 HP in the base model, come on subaru give us a 2.0 light pressure turbo for 220-240 HP and up the 2.4L turbo to 300 or so....

It is actually a rugged car, unlike most of the hyundais, fords and chevys, I wouldn’t hesitate to drive on a sandy beach for a family pick nick with my two golden doodles and my signature pendelton throw blanket and wicker basket .

I m not going to lie, I like the look, I like the engine and I like that promo footage is ball sy and I respect that. Way more bold than Honda’s “rugged” pilot and its weak sauce marketing . I HATE that the only transmission is the CVT. Its notoriously bad in performance off-road and for being long lived with abuse (towing).

I can dig it. +1 for bringing back the XT name and turbo motor, too.

Hey Subaru, put it in the Forester too. Some people like having choice.

Well we have an ‘18 Outback, so I’m already putting away the Subaru Kool-Aid by the gallon anyway, but with this Oynx XT I’m ready to start consuming it through an   IV .

I watched the debut, and thought they did an excelle nt job with it. By the end I was ready to logoff my computer, go get the doggo and pack for an epic months long Na tional Pa rk road trip. I love their support of our National Parks system, but I’m not buying any Subaru with a CVT or their boxer engine. The aftermarket/APC looking tailights aren’t helping either. Aside from those qualms it’s a nice looking wagon.

There are actually people off camera throwing mud at a stationary car.

Would you consider the occasional tow of a 1,000-lb Polaris Ranger on a small utility trailer abusive for the CVT ? That’s like, the only thing I ever tow.

truthfully any amount of towing is hard on CVT’s, but it will have a warranty so that should be of some comfort.

Kind of disappointing the dual mode X-mode won’t be in anything but the Onyx. Is it only on the top tier of the Forester? Seems like it’s just some software bits, come on Subaru.

The full size spare on the Onyx is really nice though.

From what I’ve seen/read Subaru isn’t always the most gracious when granting warranty repairs to people who don’t drive around like old hippies 99.9% of the time.

basically. I remember when I was looking at the forester XT I asked why the towing was so low, he responded say ing that most people don’t tow with the forester, and then when I pressed he also admitted they were doing a lot of transmission replacement for people that towed.

I’m not sure why everyone thinks the turbo engine is going to be better than the 3.6r. The 3.6 puts out nearly the same horsepower but it does it without the additional complexity and heat-related issues of a turbo engine.

Full disclosure - I own both a 2014 3.6r Outback and a 2014 WRX.

I’d like my wife to trade in her outback for this one.  The onyx looks good.

You can never have too big of an oil cooler on your cvt.

basically, yeah. lots of friction by nature. When it comes to towing its really hard to beat the inherent strengths of an axial planetary gear-set .

Which reminds me, I need to build a larger cooler for my wife’s car. Cardboard fitted a mock-up of this already.
